Case Study: Chugiak High School Renewal

Building for the 21st Century. Bezek • Durst • Seiser programmed and designed a $35 million renovation that is transforming a traditional large suburban high school originally constructed in the mid 1960s into a school for the 21st century. When complete, 200,000 of the 298,000 square foot facility will have undergone changes, including major additions and renovations to the gymnasiums and cafeteria, as well as to the performing arts, fine arts, photography, technology education and family consumer science departments.

Promoting small group interaction. The new facility features four student houses which support the concept of small groups learning together within a larger school. Each house is self-contained, with core program instruction, faculty amenities, student lockers, and areas for combined learning activities and gathering between classes – all designed to encourage close interaction between students, educators, and administrators.

Stimulating learning environment. The renovation includes significant improvements such as updated instructional capabilities and the latest technology. In addition, the attractive design features natural lighting and ADA compliance, as well as better student circulation and transportation access. All of these changes add up to an environment that stimulates learning.
