Piuraagvik “A Place to Play”  Barrow Recreation Center

Barrow, Alaska

binary option course The Barrow Recreation Center, or "Piuraagvik," was originally designed by BDS in 1985 and is considered one of the finest multi-use spaces in Alaska. Complete with a full-size gymnasium with spectator bleachers and two handball courts, it also houses a meeting room, saunas, locker rooms, offices, a lobby, and a warming kitchen for potlatches.

We maintained the room’s original acoustical design, which virtually eliminates reverberations and provides clarity of the room’s spectrum of sounds – from cheering crowds at basketball games to drumbeats during traditional Native dancing. We nearly tripled the size of the center, added a climbing wall, and created a tight building envelope by insulating exterior walls to expel Barrow’s arctic conditions throughout the year.
