Buckland K-12 School
Buckland, Alaska
This project was a combination of a major new addition and re-programming and renovation of the existing facility. Our phasing plan allowed the school to operate continuously (we constructed the new, then went back and renovated the old).
The challenges faced on the Buckland project were significant, including a slashed budget (after the original design was completed) and a greatly compressed timeline due to barge schedules.
BDS completed an intensive value engineering effort after the initial design was complete in order to meet the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development funding level.
What is truly remarkable about this project is its ability to bring the community together. BDS maximized multi-use spaces to provide exceptional community spaces: the gym, library, and cultural center are "zoned" to allow after-hours access without opening up the whole school.
