Chugiak High School

Chugiak, Alaska

BDS is nearing completion of a multi-year, phased renewal of this approximately 300,000 SF high school for the Anchorage School District. The challenge was to take a 35-year-old, multi-level former combined Junior High/Senior High School and creatively transform it into four distinct learning houses clustered around shared program spaces. The sequential renewal or replacement programming was achieved for all major portions of the school while sustaining core programs for over 2,000 students over 4 school years and through several school bond funding cycles. The design included a new gym, an auxiliary gym for gymnastics and wrestling, team lockers, a cross country ski room, and a weight/training room. The design also included a new cafeteria, kitchen, and student commons. The new gym featured seating for 2000, full size basketball and volleyball courts, and a suspended running track. A portion of the bleachers are retractable to allow for two full size basketball courts or three volleyball courts for practice or for gym class.
