UAF Biological Research and Diagnostics Facility (BiRD)
Fairbanks, Alaska
This 40,500 GSF facility, completed by BDS in collaboration with SmithGroup Architects (San Francisco), is designed for holding small animals including wild and bred carnivores, birds, fish and rodents used in biological and behavioral research.
The 2-story + mechanical penthouse facility is designed to support up to 3,000 rodents and small birds in small and large holding rooms clustered in suites with procedure rooms on a secure below-grade floor level, along with a small lab and cage wash and cage preparation facilities.
A section of the holding rooms can be readily converted in the future to a barrier facility with air-lock entries and staff changing rooms.
